New additions to Hedgebottom Home
Couple of surprises from her over the last few weeks, one being her love of all things fruit! Picking in the garden and she takes the berries off the raspberry bush herself and eats them.
Have always wanted to keep my own, and this past month we've taken on eight ex-battery hens, and it's thanks to The Battery Hen Welfare Trust and all that they do that we now have 'the girls' doing their own thing outside, learning to scratch, sunbathe and be hens, and to even give us eggs as well as the pleasure in watching them become right little characters.
Visited The Royal Show this year as Glyn was working alongside the boys and girls from 'Heart of England Fine Foods' and took the opportunity of walking the cattle lines and fell hook line and sinker for this rare breed. Never thought about them before as always thought they were quite large and to be honest the horns put me off, but what a beautiful breed, so, thinking spring next year I'll be on the look out for two young heifers and we'll go from there.
Libby the Golden Retriever came to us at the age of six weeks and to think we've nearly had her a year. I've had Goldens all my life as Mum and Dad had them as did Mums family so guess they are a tradition, but when we lost Maisie way too soon, I felt I couldn't have another one hence we got Tess the collie. Five years on I wanted one again and thank you to Ann Price of Trimpley who has the most fantastic dogs and Libby is one of hers.
One thing that has always upset me is the production of battery hens, and therefore have always bought free range eggs and chicken which then becomes a treat and that's how it use to be when I was growing up.
Mind you, don't think we've ever eaten as many eggs as we have in the past 3 weeks!
