Met a lovely couple from Herefordshire at Tenbury Show and had a good old chat, and looks like we’ve done a deal, so heading over there this week to sort it all out.
Having worked with dairy cows for a long time and the price of living as it it, you have to weigh up the cost of keeping them, but Highlands are low maintenance and where they originate from means they will be more than happy on our hilly field, and they are so gorgeous.
I’ve registered Hedgebottom Home as a holding so just waiting for the paperwork now, got to buy a trough, find the water pipe and then we’re away. One thing I learnt is that in the world of dairy, a cow will have her first calf at two years of age, Highland Cattle Society recommend the age of three so that gives us a bit of time to get used to the breed.
Due to arrive soon are two beautiful Highland Heifers, one is a dun colour and two years old and the other traditional red yearling.
Fell in love with the breed whilst on a visit to The Royal Show this year. I have to say I was always put off by the size of them and their horns, but it’s only when you get up close and personal that you realise they’re not as big as you think, and their nature is so docile that the horns aren’t an issue.
